The Vitelli family has been operating continuously in the Italian tomato business since 1885. Now managed by Claudia Vitelli, the business originated as a way to get Italian families in the USA access to the same high quality tomatoes they left back in Italy - handling both production and importing of the tomatoes on both sides of the Atlantic, Luigi Vitelli was one of the first vertically integrated tomato businesses in the world.
These are D.O.P. - Denominazione d'Origine Protetta - San Marzano tomatoes. The same way 'Champagne' can't be used to describe wines not from the Champagne region, D.O.P. certifies that these tomatoes are indeed harvested in the Italian San Marzano style, from where they are grown to how they are picked and peeled. There's a lot of confusion around what and how San Marzano tomatoes are defined (that white can with the words "San Marzano" at Whole Foods? It's actually domestic), but suffice to say these are the real deal.
